In English, "you" is used for singular, plural and formal. In Latvian, we use "tu" when talking about friends or people we know good. We use "jūs' to talk about more than one person. "Jūs" is the formal version of “you”.
Example. Tu esi labs draugs. - You are a good friend.; Jūs esat ļoti labs lektors. - You are a good lecturer.; Kad jūs brauksiet ekskursijā? - When are you going on a trip?
"Čau" is an informal Italian greeting that is also used in other languages. Latvians mostly use "čau" (hi) for greeting friends or close people, but it is also used as an informal farewell.
